How to fix 100% hard drive usage in Windows 10.

If your Windows 10 computer suddenly starts to slow down significantly, and the hard drive indicator is constantly lit and shows 100% load, you are not alone. This is one of the most common and annoying problems that users encounter. The computer can run so slowly that even simply opening a folder turns into a long wait.

The good news is that this situation rarely means that there is something physically wrong with your hard drive. Most often, the culprit is the system's own background processes or incorrect settings. This could be anything from overly aggressive antivirus scanning to outdated drivers or a feature that is constantly indexing files.

In this article, we will examine the main reasons that cause your disk to work at its limit and show you simple ways to fix it. You don't need to be a computer genius — most solutions boil down to changing a couple of settings. Let's restore your computer to its former speed, step by step.

Fixing 100% disk usage in Windows 10.

When trying to figure out why your computer is slowing down, you may have noticed that Disk usage in Task Manager is at 100%.

One of the easiest ways to find the culprit is to click on the Disk column in the Task Manager so that the items that consume more resources are displayed at the top of the column. As in the example shown below, you can see that the culprit is SuperFetch.

“Attributes”

The Windows search function always indexes all files on your disk and is designed to speed up file searches on your PC. However, this can cause a problem when the disk is overloaded with work and does not have the resources to perform other tasks.

Right-click on the menu Startand select Windows PowerShell (administrator).

Then enter the following in the command line: net.exe stop “Windows search” and press Enter. After that, check the task manager to see how this has affected your disk usage. If there are no changes, you can restart the search service from the command line, type: net.exe start “Windows search” and press Enter.

By temporarily disabling Windows Search, you can see if performance improves. If this solves the problem, you can disable it permanently. Press the Win + R key combination and type: services.msc and press "OKor Enter.

Scroll through the list of services and double-click on the service “Windows Search”, and on the tab “General” set to “Startup Type” value “Disabled” and press the button“OK”.

Run disk check.

Windows has a built-in tool that scans your disk for errors and attempts to fix them. Open PowerShell as an administrator and type:chkdsk.exe /f /r and press Enter. Then, at the next prompt, type: Y and press Enter.

Disable the SuperFetch feature.

SuperFetch this feature helps reduce boot time by improving application performance. However, it can cause problems with your disk. To disable it, run PowerShell as an administrator and type: net.exe stop superfetch and press Enter. Wait for the command to complete and see if the disk usage percentage in Task Manager has decreased.

If this fixes the problem, you can disable it permanently, as in the case of Window Search (shown above) and disable the service SuperFetch.

Press the Win + R key combination and enter: services.msc and click "OK" or Enter.

Scroll through the list of services and double-click on the service “SuperFetch”, and on the tab “General” set the parameter to Startup Type meaning “Disabled” and click the button“OK”.

The problem of the disk loading to 100% in Windows 10 is one of those annoyances that can drive anyone crazy. But, as you have seen, it can almost always be solved. The main thing is not to panic and to act consistently.

Start with the simplest: running an antivirus scan and disabling unnecessary background processes. Often, these are the ones that quietly eat up all your resources. If that doesn't help, dig deeper — disable the Windows Search service or Superfetch. Sometimes the solution lies in small things, such as updating drivers.

If nothing works, don't forget about the physical condition of the disk. Especially if you have a regular HDD and not a high-speed SSD. Over time, hard drives wear out, and replacing them with a modern SSD is not only a solution to the boot problem, but also a great way to give your computer a second life.
