Have you ever had this happen to you: a song is playing, the melody is literally stuck in your head, but you don't know the name? Maybe you heard it in a cafe, in an advertisement, or in someone's car. In the past, the only option was to painstakingly remember fragments of the lyrics or hum the tune to your friends in the hope that someone would recognize it. Fortunately, today this task can be solved in a couple of seconds.
Nowadays, you don't need to be an expert or have special equipment to recognize music. All you need is your smartphone with internet access and one of the special apps. Just press the button, and the program will “listen” to the sound through the microphone, analyze it, and almost instantly give you the exact name of the track and the artist.
In this article, we will look at the most popular and convenient ways to quickly identify unfamiliar music. You will learn which services are best at this task, even if it is noisy around you or only a short excerpt of the song is playing.
Identifying music online is easier than it seems: just turn on the microphone in one of the apps like Google, Yandex, or special services like Shazam, and in just a few seconds, they will tell you what song is playing around you. This is useful when you hear a track in a cafe, on the street, or in a video, but don't know what it's called. Just hold your phone up to the sound source, and the program will recognize the melody, show you the name and artist, and even give you a link where you can listen to it. The main thing is that you don't need silence; they can handle background noise.
Method 1: AHA Music
AHA Music is a multifunctional online service that works in all browsers on computers and mobile devices. It allows you to identify music by capturing it from a microphone, via a file, or a browser extension when the composition is played on a tab and read by the add-on for further recognition. Let's take a closer look at this extension and understand how it works.
Go to AHA Music
- If you are going to use AHA Music as a browser extension, click on the link and install the application. Next, you just need to activate it on the tab with the music being played to read it and recognize the title.
- However, we suggest focusing on two modes of AHA Music that are more suitable for users who do not want to install anything additional. The first involves recognizing sound from a microphone when music is playing nearby. Accordingly, a microphone must be connected to the computer for this method to work. Before you start capturing, please note that AHA Music only provides 10 free recognitions per day.

- If you have a file with music whose title you need to identify, on the same tab, but a little higher up, click the button “Choose a file”.
- Then select it from the window that appears “Explorer”, by double-clicking on it with the left mouse button.

- Wait for it to load and click “Start”, button, which will start the processing and recognition of the selected track.
- In a few seconds, you will receive information about whether AHA Music was able to determine the name of the song in this file. Below, you should see the name and artist.

- If you click on the link in this block, you will be redirected to a separate page where you can find out which sites have this track, as well as play it on YouTube if it is posted as a clip or simply as an audio recording.
Method 2: Audiotag
The Audiotag online service specializes in various tools for collecting statistics and useful information related to music. Through it, you can find out what is currently playing on the radio, what was popular a few years ago, and what music others are finding. Of course, there are also two song recognition features, which we will discuss in this article.
Go to the Audiotag service
- Once on the main page of the site, choose one of two convenient options for capturing the track that will be convenient for your specific situation. This can be recognition from a file or by link.
- In the second case, you simply paste the link to the track (various video hosting sites are supported, but YouTube is the preferred option). In the first case, you will need to select the file via “Explorer” and confirm its upload to the site.
- Next, confirm the captcha and click on the active button “Recognize”, to start the processing.
- After a few seconds, the page will reload and you will see the result. If there are several different tracks playing in the entire recording or video from the inserted link, they will be sorted in order, and the playback time interval will be displayed in the list.
- To quickly play the track you found, we recommend simply finding it on YouTube and listening to it to make sure it is the music composition you are looking for.

- At the bottom of the page, you will find the ‘Reset’, which will quickly take you to the track download form and allow you to try to select a different song if necessary.
Method 3: Shazam
Although Shazam is not a full-fledged online service, but works in a browser as an extension, we could not ignore this solution, as it is the most popular and works better than the rest. This is due to both its extensive track database and regular updates to the artificial intelligence that identifies the music. To work with Shazam, you don't need to download a program, you just need to install an add-on to recognize any track while working in your browser.
Tab. Download Shazam
- Open the main page of the site to download Shazam from your browser's extension store.

- In it, click “Install” and confirm the installation.
- In the future, you will need to run Shazam from the list of extensions, so it would be logical to pin it to the general panel for convenience.

- Play any video in your browser that has the song you want, then launch the Shazam window to start automatic recognition.
- Wait for the song to be identified and then search for it on any music platform that is convenient for you.
You may have noticed that Shazam only recognizes tracks that are playing in a browser tab. The file upload feature is not supported, but this can be fixed. All you need is any audio editor with a built-in player that works online.
Go to the Mp3cut service
- Go to the recommended editor or choose any other one you like. Load the track from the file and make sure it plays correctly.
- To identify it, you just need to launch the Shazam extension and wait for it to identify the song that is playing.
So, identifying the music around you is now easier than ever. No need to memorize lines from the chorus or painstakingly recall the melody. Modern technology has made this process instantaneous and convenient.
Just keep your smartphone handy with an internet connection and one of the recognition apps. It only takes a few seconds to find out the track title and artist name. This works not only with songs from the radio, but also with music in cafes, videos on social networks, or movie soundtracks.
