Have you ever been in this situation: you're almost done watching a movie, a large download is about to finish, but it's time to leave or you just really want to sleep? Leaving your computer on all night or all day is not the best idea. It creates unnecessary noise, consumes electricity, and causes unnecessary wear and tear on components.
Fortunately, Windows 11 has several simple and convenient ways to schedule automatic shutdown. You don't need to be a computer genius to figure it out. You can instruct the system to shut down on its own after a specified time, even if you are not around.
In this article, we will look at the most straightforward methods for setting up a shutdown timer. You can choose the one that seems most convenient to you and easily put it into practice. This will save you time and energy and extend the life of your computer.
Sometimes it is convenient for the computer to turn itself off — for example, after downloading files or watching videos at night. In Windows 11, this is easy to set up using the built-in command tool or through a task schedule, and anyone can do it, even without technical knowledge.
Method 1: Console command
Many features of Windows 11, like previous versions of Microsoft's operating system, can be controlled using console commands. One of these commands is designed to automatically shut down your PC or laptop, and if you add additional parameters, you can delay the shutdown.
shutdown -s -t 3600
Or right-click and select3600 in our example, are reason 3: Incorrect network mode).
The command itself can be used not only in the classic console, but also in some other system applications, namely:
- Command prompt;
- Or;
- “Terminal”;
- “Run”;
- “Drivers”;
- 2. Resetting the zero sector on the hard drive.

Note: If you don't know how to open any of the above operating system components, just start typing its name in the search bar on the taskbar, and then select the appropriate result in the search results. Also, all of them, except for Command Prompt and The main thing is to remember about security. If you are sure about the source of the program, feel free to add an exception. Once you have entered the appropriate request and clicked “Enter” to execute it (or select the result in the case of a search), a countdown will start, and when the time is up, the PC will shut down.
Please note! Select
If you want to force your computer to shut down without receiving warnings or closing running programs and open documents, use the command with an additional operator:
shutdown -s -t 3600 -fTo cancel the shutdown, use the following command:
shutdown -a
Method 2: Virtual shutdown button
The console command discussed above has another use—it can be used to create a virtual PC shutdown button. Essentially, it is a regular shortcut (but stylized if desired) that will initiate the procedure we are interested in when launched. Such an object can be placed on the desktop, taskbar, or in any convenient folder. How to create it is described in a separate article on our website, but there is one caveat.

The instructions linked above use the command shutdown -s -t, without additional operators. Your task is to adjust it at the shortcut creation stage so that the shutdown is performed after the required amount of time.
Alternatively, you can create several such objects at once, each of which will be responsible for a different time interval, assign a corresponding name, and use them as needed.
| Command | Time interval |
|---|---|
| shutdown -s -t 3600 | 60 min. |
| shutdown -s -t 1800 | 30 min. |
| shutdown -s -t 900 | 15 min. |
| shutdown -s -t 60 | 1 min. |
Note: If necessary, you can assign a key combination that will launch the shortcut for the scheduled shutdown of the PC and, in fact, execute the command corresponding to this task. This is described in more detail in the article linked above.
Method 3: Task Scheduler
The command discussed above shutdown allows you to shut down your computer after a specified period of time, but not at a specified time (although it is obviously not difficult to calculate it). If you are interested in the latter, this can be done using the built-in Windows 11 Task Scheduler.

As the name suggests, this tool allows you to create various types of tasks, and the one mentioned in the title of this article is one of them. Moreover, you can create a daily schedule in the scheduler that will run automatically and require no intervention on your part (after the necessary preliminary settings, of course). For more information on how to use it for this purpose, see the instructions at the link below.
More details: How to schedule a PC shutdown in Windows 11 using the Task Scheduler

As you can see, automatically shutting down your computer in Windows 11 is a simple and convenient feature. It doesn't matter whether you choose the command line, Task Scheduler, or a simple shortcut on your desktop, the essence is the same: you entrust the routine to the system.
This not only saves you time, but also helps you take better care of your equipment. You no longer have to wonder if the download or stream finished while you were napping. The computer will take care of itself, following your command.
Experiment with different methods and find the one that suits you best. Such a small thing can make using a PC much more comfortable and free you from unnecessary hassle.
