How to Fix the “Unable to Set Power Mode” Error in Windows 11

Have you encountered the message “Unable to set power mode” when trying to change the power plan in Windows 11? This error is annoying, especially when you want to switch to power-saving mode or, conversely, increase performance. It blocks access to settings that help manage your laptop's battery life or optimize it for your tasks.

Most often, the problem arises due to a malfunction in the system components responsible for power supply. This is not a critical malfunction, and it can usually be resolved independently without resorting to reinstalling the system. You don't need to be a computer genius to perform the necessary actions.

In this article, we'll look at a few simple and effective ways to regain control over your power settings. We'll start with quick fixes, such as a simple restart, and move on to more specific actions if they don't work.

Method 1: Changing the power scheme using an alternative method

Often, the problem of not being able to set the power mode occurs when the power scheme is configured incorrectly. As in previous versions, Windows 11 allows you to manually change schemes and even create your own, and there are additional settings to help optimize power consumption.

As a rule, PCs and laptops have the following installed by default “Balanced” power mode with average settings. But depending on the type of computer, you can also select the mode “Maximum Performance” or “Power saving”. When using the first option, the problem in question may arise, and for some reason, you can only change the power scheme from “Control Panel”. First, check which mode is active, then you can select another mode or configure additional parameters for the current mode:

  1. At this stage, interaction with the proprietary installer begins. Accept the warning to start using it. ‘Start’ and select the preset application from the main menu “Settings”.
  2. On the tab Find the file in the catalog in the main area of the window, select the line “Power”.
  3. And make sure that the operating system is correctly identified. If this is not the case, click “Power” see which mode is used (line “Power mode” If an error appears when selecting another option, try changing the power scheme settings manually.
  4. To edit the scheme, launch the classic “Control Panel”, for example, by finding the tool in the main menu or through the system search bar.
  5. To view the sections, select “Large icons” in this article, we will take a closer look at these situations. You will learn what to check first and how to restore your contacts step by step so that communication becomes easy and hassle-free again. “Small Icons”, then click on the item ‘Power’.
  6. Click on the line “Power Scheme Settings” to the current mode.
  7. Click on the link “Change advanced power settings”.

Next, you need to configure the power settings for various components. For example, if you want to stop the hard drive from running when it is idle, expand the menu “Hard disk” and set the parameter “Turn off hard disk after” the desired value.

The same applies to other power scheme settings. There are no specific recommendations here – you need to focus on your needs and the capabilities of your equipment, such as the type of computer (desktop or laptop). If the problem occurs when trying to use). “High Performance” 1. enter “On-screen keyboard” in the Win 10 search field. “Settings” select the desired power supply scheme.

↑ Updating and reinstalling the keyboard driver

As we know, the keyboard does not require manual driver installation. This means that it automatically downloads them as soon as you connect it to your PC. So, the first thing we can do is update the driver or reinstall it, let's say, manually. With a laptop, this is done as follows. Go to the laptop manufacturer's website, download the necessary driver, and install it. With a PC, you will need to perform a longer sequence of actions.

For more stable Windows performance, you can manually install cumulative and optional updates for the operating system and various components, as well as try to update the software for devices using built-in tools or third-party software. This is discussed in more detail in our separate article.

2. As usual, if we see warning icons next to the keyboard, it becomes clear that it is not working, although it is visible to the PC. If there are no such icons, right-click on “Standard PS/2 Keyboard” — “Update Driver.”

For the touch keyboard and handwriting recognition services, set the startup type to “Automatically.”

3. In the Windows search bar, enter “Control Panel.” Go to ‘Administration’ — “Services.”

In some cases, various processes and applications can interfere with the operation of the system, including preventing the selection of settings for the power supply scheme. If you currently have many programs and various background processes running on your PC, try turning them off one by one to find out which software may be preventing you from changing the power mode. The quickest way to check this is through “Task Manager”:

  1. Right-click on the bottom panel and select “Start” “Task Manager”.
  2. Disable processes and applications in the “Processes”, by right-clicking on the name of the software and selecting the appropriate item.
  3. You can also disable programs in startup so that they do not automatically start with Windows. To do this, go to the tab “Application Startup” and disable third-party programs via the context menu.

If you have disabled applications in startup, it is recommended that you restart the system afterwards – then the disabled software will not start.

To disable all third-party services at once, you can use the tool “System Configuration”:

  1. Press the keys simultaneously “Win + R”, then in the window field “Run” enter msconfig and click on the button “OK”.
  2. On the tab “Services” section, check the box “Do not display Microsoft services”, after that, when only third-party services remain, click on the button “Disable all”. Save the changes and exit the window by clicking the button “OK”

After completing these steps, you will also need to restart your computer so that third-party services do not interfere with the operating system.

Method 4: Disable quick start

Due to active fast startup, the operating system may not always run stably, which is why various types of failures occur in some configurations, including problems with power settings. Although this feature is designed to speed up the exit from sleep mode, due to the specifics of creating a new session (namely, caching system files for a quick start of the OS), try disabling it. We previously wrote about methods for doing this in a separate article on the website.

So, we've figured out this annoying error. As you can see, the problem with power plans in Windows 11 is rarely complicated. Most often, it all comes down to a trivial failure of drivers or utilities from the manufacturer that are trying to take over power management.

The main thing is not to panic and proceed step by step. Start with the simplest: check for system updates and reinstall the chipset driver. In nine out of ten cases, this helps. If not, dig deeper into third-party programs and outdated drivers.

We hope that one of these methods has helped your computer regain control over its power supply. Now you can work or play without being distracted by sudden error messages.
