How to install Google Assistant on a PC running Windows 11 or 10

Google Assistant is a smart assistant that many people are used to using on their phones and smart speakers. It helps you manage tasks, answer questions, play music, and more, simply by responding to your voice. But what if you could enjoy all these conveniences right from your Windows computer screen?

Although there is no official Google Assistant app for PCs, there is one proven and reliable way to install it. This method uses the official Google app for Android, which works perfectly on modern versions of Windows thanks to built-in support for Android apps. This is not a hack or dubious software, but a legal and safe approach.

In this article, we will walk you through the process of preparing your system and installing Google Assistant on your PC. The process does not take long and does not require in-depth technical knowledge. You will be able to launch Assistant in a separate window and use its voice commands without interrupting your work on the big screen.

Before you begin, go to gitHub page, and download the application “Google-Assistant-Unofficial-Desktop-Client”based on the Google Assistant SDK, the client is available for Windows, Linux, and Mac. Always download the latest build. Since this guide is written for Windows 11 or 10, download the file with the extension “.exe”.

After downloading, you don't need to install the app right away. We have described the entire process, and you won't miss the installation if you follow each step in sequence.

You cannot install Google Assistant directly on a computer running Windows 11 or 10 — there is no official PC program for it. But you can use the assistant through your browser: just go to the Google website, turn on voice search, and speak as you would on your phone. Android emulators or shell programs can also help, but they require more steps and are not suitable for everyone. The easiest and most reliable way is to simply use your browser.

Once you have completed the registration process, you now need to “Configure the consent screen” for authentication.

Step 1: Follow the link to the page Cloud Console.

Step 2: In the navigation bar next to the logo, find and select the project you just created.

Step 3: Now, in the left corner, click on the hamburger menu and select “APIs & Services” →“Dashboard”. You will be taken to the toolbar page.

Step 4: At the top of the page, click “+ ENABLE APIS AND SERVICES”.

Step 5: A new page will open with the API libraries, where you can find the API we need and enable it.

Step 8: Now use the hamburger menu to go to the screen Credentials to configure your credentials.

Step 9: Click on the “CONFIGURE CONSENT SCREEN” to configure the consent screen.

Step 10: On the OAuth consent screen, in the section User Type (User type) select “External”. Then click the button “CREATE”.

Step 11: On the next page, in the Application Registration section, select your email address in the line “User Support email”, scroll down the page and enter the same email address in the field “Developer Contact Information”, immediately after that, click SAVE AND CONTINUE to save the changes.


Step 12: In the next step on the screen “SCOPES”, click the button “SAVE AND CONTINUE”.

Step 13: In the window “Optional info” click “SAVE AND CONTINUE”, then click the button “Back to Dashboard”.


Step 14: Now in the section “Test user” click the button “+ ADD USERS”, to add a new user who will be able to connect to the application.

Step 15: In the pop-up window in the section “ADD USERS” enter the email address of the Gmail account you will use to connect to the assistant (preferably your current Gmail account), you can add multiple accounts separated by commas, then click the “Save” to save the settings.

Installing the Google Assistant application

Step 1: Again. Open Windows Explorer, go to the folder “Downloads” and install the previously downloaded Google Assistant client using the file “Google_Assistant-Setup-1.0.0-rc.2.exe”.

Step 2: If you see a warning in Windows 11, click “Continue anyway” to run the installer.

Step 3: In the Google Assistant setup wizard, select whether other users of your PC can use the application and click the button “Next”.

Step 4: In the next window, click “Install”.

Step 5: When the installation is complete, click the button “Done”.

The app is available in both light and dark modes. You can switch themes in the app settings.

Set up authentication in the app

Step 1: After installation, open the Google Assistant application using the icon in the system tray (the overflow menu in the taskbar corner) or the Win Shift A key combination.

Step 2: In the application that opens, click the gear icon in the upper left corner (see screenshot).

Step 3: In the section “Authentication” you need to add a file to the file “client_secret_xxxxxxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.apps.googleusercontent.com.json” which we obtained in “Step 8:” the first stage of configuration, to do this, click the button “Browse” in the explorer window, go to the folder “Downloads”select the file and click the button “Open”.

Step 8: You need to log in with your Gmail account, where you will see a warning that Google has not verified this application, but since you created this application, it is safe to continue. Click “Continue”.

Step 9: Now grant the project access rights to your account by checking the appropriate boxes and clicking the “Continue”.

Step 10: As a result, an authorization code will be displayed on the screen. Click the copy button to place the code in the clipboard.

Step 11: Go to the application, paste the code into the appropriate field, and click the button. Submit.

Step 12: There are no parameters to change here; this field only lists other services that ensure the correct operation of the current one. “Relaunch Required”.
