Over time, your computer may slow down, even if you have a powerful PC running Windows 11. You may notice that programs start to respond a little slower than usual, or the system as a whole becomes less responsive. This is often not due to viruses or serious malfunctions, but because the RAM, which should be fast and clean, gradually becomes clogged with temporary data.
Many users are looking for ways to “clean” their RAM to restore their computer's former speed. There are many tips on the internet for using special cleaning programs, but Windows 11 has its own built-in and safe methods. They help the system optimize memory usage on its own, without resorting to questionable third-party software.
In this article, we will look at simple and effective ways to free up RAM. You will learn how to make the system free up resources on its own and when it is really worth intervening manually. These methods do not require in-depth technical knowledge and will help keep your computer in good shape.
Checking the cached RAM
When Windows 11 is running, the RAM cache almost always grows and, in most cases, is only cleared after a reboot. It includes files and tasks from both third-party programs and standard processes. Creating a cache pool allows you to perform various actions much faster when reopening previously launched applications. You can check how much RAM is currently cached using any monitoring program or the Task Manager.

As for the reasons for cache load, there are many factors involved. The main ones, of course, are the size of the swap file, the time spent using the operating system, and the number of programs running. The more different processes are involved, the more files are stored in the RAM cache. Because of this, there are different methods for cleaning and unloading, and we will discuss all of them in the following methods.
Method 1: Restart your computer

Method 2: Disable unnecessary startup programs
The programs added to startup greatly affect the RAM cache in Windows 11. The fact is that they start together with the operating system and begin to run in the background, taking up a certain amount of cached RAM space. Even if you restart your PC, the cache will fill up again after a short period of time in the new session. Therefore, we recommend checking the startup list and disabling unnecessary programs to not only free up the total amount of RAM, but also reduce the speed at which the cache fills up.

Method 3: Terminate the most “resource-intensive” processes
The recommendation to terminate tasks in Windows 11 that consume the most RAM is relevant both for freeing up space and for clearing the cache. Most likely, it is precisely these programs that have created a significant amount of cached memory during their active work, and after they are completely terminated, the space should be freed up. After performing this operation, the program can be restarted, and the cache will gradually build up again.
- Right-click on “Start” and from the context menu that appears, select the item “Task Manager”.

- On the processes tab, enable sorting by RAM consumption by clicking on the corresponding item. Find the tasks that consume the most resources and can be disabled now.

- Right-click on this task and select the item from the context menu “Remove Task”. After 10-20 seconds, you can restart it and monitor how the cached RAM fills up.

Method 4: Editing the registry
The registry editing option involves changing just one parameter, which will cause the paging file to be cleared automatically when the computer is shut down. This will allow you to have several tens of percent less cached RAM in the next session, which appears immediately after logging in. Accordingly, this method is only suitable if the swap file is enabled in your operating system.
- Find it via “Start” “Registry Editor” and run this application.

- In it, enter the following path in the address bar
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Managementand follow it by pressing the Enter.
- Find the parameter named “ClearPageFileAtShutdown” key and double-clicking on it to open “Properties”.

- Set the value to «1», to activate the function of clearing the swap file when the PC is turned off. Save the changes and restart the OS to check how much cached RAM will be available immediately after startup in the next session. Its volume should decrease slightly.

Method 5: Creating a shortcut to run pending processes
There are many tips on the Internet about opening the “rundll32.exe” and “advapi32.dll” files to clear the entire RAM cache. In fact, this action only allows you to start waiting processes, some of which filled the RAM cache before the task was completed. With these files, you only initiate the launch of such tasks, after which the cache size may decrease slightly if it contained any records related to waiting processes.
- For convenience, it is better to create a shortcut for the commands. To do this, right-click on an empty space on the desktop, hover the cursor over “Create” button and select the appropriate item from the list.

- Set the command for the object location
%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe advapi32.dll, ProcessIdleTasksmenu and click “Next”.
- Set any name for the shortcut, then confirm its creation.

- Launch it from the desktop and wait 10 seconds, then proceed to check the RAM cache. No graphical menus or notifications appear when working with the shortcut; all tasks are performed in the background.

Sometimes your computer slows down not because it is broken, but simply because the RAM is overflowing with unnecessary data — such as the clipboard, remnants of closed programs, or temporary files. In Windows 11, there is no single button to “clear RAM,” but you can quickly free up memory: restart your computer, close unnecessary programs in Task Manager, or enable the Memory Diagnostic feature when experiencing severe lag. This is not magic, but a simple way to restore speed without unnecessary effort.
Method 6: Disable visual effects
Visual effects in Windows 11 also create entries in the RAM cache so that you don't see any lag when working with the graphical interface. If you are not satisfied with the constant large amount of cached space, you can disable some visual effects, sacrificing the beauty of the operating system shell.
- Through the search in “Start” find the item “System Performance and Appearance Settings”, then left-click on it to open the corresponding window with settings.

- You will be taken to the tab “Visual Effects”, where you can select an option “Ensure best performance”, so that most visual effects are disabled automatically.

- If you are interested in more detailed settings, review the entire list and uncheck the visual effects that you consider unnecessary.

As you can see, clearing the RAM cache in Windows 11 is not some mythical ritual, but a series of specific actions. The main thing is to understand that in most cases, the system does an excellent job of managing memory on its own, and there is no need to constantly interfere with its work.
Remember that manual cleaning is more of an emergency measure if you notice clear signs of slowdown. Restarting resource-intensive applications or simply rebooting your computer is often more than enough to get the system back up to speed.
Instead of constantly monitoring the cache, it is better to focus on properly configuring startup and tracking programs that may “leak” and quietly consume your resources. This will be much more beneficial for overall performance in the long run.
